Transformative agreements: an introduction for editors
What’s a transformative agreement? It allows researchers access to a portfolio of journals, plus funding to cover Article Publication Charges (APCs) when choosing to publish open access.
Why do we need transformative agreements? There’s more pressure on the traditional subscription model, as policy and funder mandates favor routes towards open access publication. A transformativeagreement moves funding from reading towards publishing – whilst recognizing that the subscription element remains an important part of the agreement.
Why do you, as an author, need to know about them? The aim of each agreement is to enable open access publishing for researchers at participating institutions. Our open access authors have benefited from:
- A simple process – publishing charges are paid centrally by your institution
- Increased readership, citations, and Altmetric scores
- A broad coverage of subjects available to publish in
- Compliance with funder mandates
Whilst each agreement is unique, there are some common elements in most:
- They are for a set term
- The agreements combine both read access and open access publishing
- Most include open access publishing in fully gold and hybrid journals
- Most include a discount on the APC
- They cover research articles and reviews, unless otherwise specified (NB – they may also vary by each participating institution covered under the agreement)
