Democratizing access to Cochrane Library

May 21, 2025

The Cochrane Library supports practitioners, students, researchers, and patients in their search for healthcare answers. Expanding access beyond the university setting is the first step to helping users connect with the answers they need.

This is why over a dozen countries worldwide fund nationwide public access to Cochrane Library through a Cochrane national provision. This access model ensures that practitioners, researchers, and medical students have the resources to care for all patients across regions, reducing economic and geographic disparities between rural and urban areas .

National healthcare provisions also empower individuals to take control of their health, access resources for life-changing diagnoses, review clinical information, and prepare for discussions with their healthcare providers. Plain language summaries ensure that non-medical experts can understand the available evidence. Plus, as of January 2024, Cochrane has published more than 49,000 translations of Cochrane Review plain language summaries and abstracts, reducing the linguistic barrier to global evidence-informed health decisions.

Spain has sponsored public access to Cochrane Library since 2003. This is one of many evidence-based health programs the Spanish Ministry of Health supports to translate innovation and knowledge from the academic sphere into information and training for medical professionals in the field.

“Public administrations should do all that's in their hands to continue to promote and strengthen evidence-based healthcare,” says
Alberto Merchante-González, Chief of Public Health at the Spanish Ministry of Health

Since its creation in 1993, the Cochrane Collaboration has become a global gold standard for evidence-based health due to its ability to provide rigorous information for professionals and health systems around the world, making this project worthy of all our support.”
